Having been invited by the Deacon Charitable Foundation to apply for grant funding, NICU Families Northwest requested support for a special initiative to build community among inpatient families at our Partner Hospitals. We are thrilled to share that Deacon Charitable Foundation approved our grant proposal as-is, and will provide us with 100% of the funds requested. With a generous budget of $2,000 we are confident we can launch this exciting and much-needed program, and begin to develop partnerships that will sustain it in the coming years.
The Full Heart Food Cart will provide healthy, fresh breakfast food and beverages once a month to promote peer-to-peer relationship building within the unit, invite conversation with graduate families, and reinforce the value of self care for parents. Graduate NICU parents (families who have been discharged from the hospital with their child for at least 3 months) will act as hosts for the food cart, and are on hand to stimulate conversation and offer insight. This service will be especially helpful for parents in units without private rooms, hospitals that are more remotely located away from convenient or affordable food options, and for low-income families whose NICU-related expenses are a strain.
